Movie Review: Babumoshai Bandookbaaz

Babumoshai Bandookbaaz

Movie: Babumoshai Bandookbaaz
Director: Kushan Nandy
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bidita Bag, Jatin Goswami, Divya Dutta, Shraddha Das

The trailer of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz had very well given us all a hint that this upcoming film of Nawazuddin is going to give a flavor of Gangs of Wasseypur’s famous character Faizal. Rightly so, this film has all the ingredients which we found in the Wasseypur saga. It has guns, raw characters, uncanny dialogues and beautiful women to entice them.

But Babumoshai Bandookbaaz fails to impress, despite good performances by the supporting cast Jatin Goswami and Bidita Bag. Though Nawaz has put together a brilliant performance but still the audience kind of already is familiar with Babu Bihari, playing the role of gun-for-hire has the shades of all his previous characters.

As soon as the first shot opens, we get a feeling that this film is indie in nature and that is how it is but its play time which is just above 2 hours seems a bit too stretched for the storyline which the film was carrying. Babu Bihari (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Banke Bihari (Jatin Goswami) are rivals and are playing this game which is different but lacks a texture. Moreover, Bidita’s character Phulwa is much underwritten.

But there are moments in this film, as there are in every Nawazuddin film. There’s this scene where Babu and Banke are discussing the ransom they get for killing people, Banke getting a much lesser amount then mentions about inflation problem and how difficult it is to survive. This particular scene brings out the irony of two sharp shooters who are part of the same circle as we are.

Conclusively, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz fails to shine despite the blood, rawness, beauty, and Nawazuddin. The screenplay could have been tighter. But it is a decent watch for people who like the to watch raw films.

I give it 2 star out of 5.
